All You Ever Wanted to Know About Google's Android Operating System


The Android Operating System was revealed on November 5, 2007. The Open Handset Alliance had an agreement among businesses which consists of 65 firms to improve the performance of mobile devices. The 65 firms comprise of software, hardware and telecom companies which aims the advancing of the open standards for mobile devices.

The Android is an operating system which controls the mobile device. In this operating system, it includes key applications and a middleware. A middleware is a computer software that connects the applications or the software components. The Android also uses a modified version the Linux Kernel. The Linux Kernel is an operating system with kernel as the central component. It is used by the Linux family with a Unix-like. It is a free and open source software wherein, the users has the right to change, study, use and improve the design with the availability of the source code. With the Linux process, the Android starts and executes an application code when it is needed and shuts down when it is not in use.

The Android is in a Java language. It is a programming language that is the 20th century's most influential at the moment. It is used from application software to Web applications.

On April 30, 2009 Android released the 1.5 Cupcake for Android. It had the Linux Kernel 2.6.27. It can watch and view videos through the camcorder mode, you can upload videos in YouTube and pictures to Picasa, has a soft keyboard with text prediction, with Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP support, can connect automatically to a Bluetooth headset within a certain distance, there are new widgets and folders that can be seen on the Home screen, and it has animated screen transitions.

After the Cupcake, there was the 1.6 Donut which is based on Linux Kernel 2.6.29. It was released on September 15, 2009. The 2.0/2.1 Éclair was out on October 26, 2009. It was based on the Linux Kernel 2.6.29. The Froyo was out in the market on May 20, 2010 and was based on Linux Kernel. The next Android update that will be out but has not yet been released is the Gingerbread.

The confirmed features are support for WebM video playback and the improved copy paste function.

The HTC Dream was the first mobile device that had the Android Operating System. It was released on October 22, 2008. The applications that can be found in the device were the full HTML web browser, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Maps, Google Talk and YouTube. The Android OS smartphone has ranked second among all smartphone OS sold in the United States. The BlackBerry OS ranked first and the iPhone OS ranked third.
